Imagine someone could learn about you only by looking through your trash can. What three items might they find in your trash today, and what would each item reveal about your personality, habits, interests, or life right now?

September 18th Prompt Response: If someone was digging throughy trash they would find these 3 things. These items would help describe me as a person. Firstly, a old pair of bloody socks. Not trying to be gross but I run constantly and my toe nails are always bleeding and falling off. Secondly, they would find a pair of sunglasses. I always end up breaking mine from being outside. This relates to me because I am such a outdoorsy person, and not afraid to do crazy things. Lastly, you would find protein bar wrappers. i’m an athlete, these simple protein bars help me get my macros in and all that. If you wanna hangout with me and be my friend, just buy me protein bars.  Summary: Tiday in class we finished our 10 songs for our character. Reflection: Each song I tried to really look into his looks and personality traits. I had to use quotes and other context clues from the story!

Today, we learned about the two types of characterization: direct and indirect characterization. We then applied what we learned by analyzing characters from James Baldwin’s “The Rockpile” using the STEAL method: Speech, Thoughts, Effect on Others, Actions, and Looks. Now, apply characterization to yourself. If someone were using the STEAL method to characterize you, how would they describe you? Select all parts of STEAL and explain what they reveal about your personality. Use specific examples. For example, what do your actions reveal about you? What does the way you speak reveal? How do you affect others? What might your thoughts or appearance communicate about who you are?

September 17th Prompt Response:  Speech- I talk a lot and joke around with my friends. This shows I’m pretty outgoing and like having fun. Thoughts- I think a lot about my future and what I want to do. I also think about my friends and family a lot, which shows I care about them. Effects on others- I usually make my friends laugh and try to make people feel included. I like being someone people can talk to. Actions-I do a lot of sports and try to do good in school. This shows I work hard and like staying busy. Looks- I usually like to look nice and put together. I think this shows I care about how I look. I think I’m outgoing, caring, and hardworking, but I also like to have fun . Summary- Tiday we looked at the board and compared people’s looks and backgrounds. Reflection- I learned how music can really connect with a certain character.

In "The Rockpile", John and Roy do not always receive the same treatment from the adults in their family. Have you ever felt that you or someone else in your family was treated differently from everyone else? What caused the difference, and do you think it was fair? Explain.

September 15th Prompt Response:  Sometimes I feel like me and my siblings get treated different by our parents.  Like one of us can do something and not get in trouble but someone else would.  I think it happens because our parents expect different things from us.  Sometimes it’s annoying because it feels like someone is getting away with stuff.  I know everyone is different though so I get why the rules might not always be the same.  But sometimes it still feels pretty unfair. Summary: Today we finished out writable assignment in class. Reflection: I got to read in class today. I took away the different uses of words they said in the story.

In “The Rockpile,” the children know that the rockpile is dangerous and that they are supposed to stay away from it, but curiosity still draws them toward it. Think about a time when curiosity or temptation caused you to ignore a warning or rule. What happened, and what did you learn from the experience?

September 14th Prompt  Response:  One time I ignored a warning because I was curious of what could happen. me and my friends went somewhere we were told not to go. When we got there at first, it was super fun and nothing really happened. Then we started to realize that we really shouldn’t be there. We left because we all didn’t wanna get in trouble. I learned that warnings are there for a reason and that we should always listen to them.  Summary: We did a writable assignment in class. Reflection: I learned that in the stories we have to be careful about what we are reading. In older stories there are grammar and sayings that we wouldn’t use now.

September 11 changed many aspects of American life, even though your generation was born afterward. Think about a major event that has happened during your own lifetime, such as the COVID-19 pandemic or another event that affected your community or the country. How do you think your experience with that event helps you understand what it might have been like for Americans to experience the uncertainty and change following 9/11? Explain the connection.

Prompt Response:  When experiencing COVID-19 this provided a direct parallel to the aftermath of 9/11. This is because directly shattered, our everyday lives and normal routines. The sudden disruption of normal life, on September 11, 2001 airports we're grounded, landmarks were closed, and this normal Tuesday turned into a disaster. While in March 2020, schools, offices,  and stores were instantly closed from this pandemic. both of these moments proof that a normal normal day can instantly turn into a historical point. Americans are now faced with an invisible fear of terrorism. this led to permanent changes in airport security.  Summary: Today in class we took a test on our book weve been reading. Reflection:

Emily struggles with letting go of people throughout her life, and the ending reveals the extreme length she went to in order to keep Homer with her. Why do you think some people have such a difficult time accepting loss or change? Connect Emily’s actions to your own observations or experiences with people struggling to let go.

Prompt Response:  Psychologically people always have a hard time letting go of things. Struggling usually comes from a loss of certain things. Such as fear of isolation, fear in time, and control of helplessness. Emily over here is literally hoarding a corpse. That is her with her feelings of not being able to let go. She's also not accepting the towns modernization and deliveries/taxes.  Summary: Today in class, we used writeable to answer questions while we read the story. Reflection:  I learned how we should use certain words and sentences when discussing. As well as when we are writing down our answers.

In Part I of A Rose for Emily, Emily’s house stands out from the community and reflects both her past and the changes happening around her. Think about a house, building, or place that holds special memories for you. What does that place look like, what memories do you connect with it, and what does it represent to you?

Prompt Response:  The house I would want to look like is a weathered green house. With a nice wooden porch at the back a 1960s farmhouse. The furniture would be bright and colorful pillows with two couches, with a ceiling fan during summer nights. The memories connected to me was when I was little eating watermelon slices. As well as singing, playing games, and talking for hours with my grandparents. This represents the porch is safety and family roots just like Emilys household. Summary: today we read in class the book and we each took turns reading a paragraph. We then spoke about what it meant. Reflection:  I learned about how different they used to talk back in the day. The meanings and words that they use back then definitely not acceptable now.

With 4.5-week grades posting on September 2, reflect on your experience in American Literature so far. What has been going well for you, what has been challenging, and what is one thing you need to improve moving forward?

Prompt Response: So far I really enjoyed your class. I have always liked English and learning about American Lit is super fun and interesting. I have been on top of all my in class assignments and getting good grades on them. What I need to work on is my blog posts, I have gotten behind on them super quickly. So, in the future I will be doing them right away and uploading them. I am excited to keep learning more and improving my skulls.  Summary: We did an Illuminate assignment on Emily Dickinson's quotes. Reflection: I learned more about quotes and got a better understanding for each. Also I deepened my knowledge on the critical thinking aspect on it.

Prompt: In “Her Sweet Weight on My Heart a Night” by Emily Dickinson, the speaker describes the emotional weight another person can have on us. Think about someone who has left a lasting impact on your life. In what ways do you still carry that person with you?

Prompt Response: When I think of a person whos left a lasting impact on my life, I think of my grandma. She basically raised me with my mom. When my mom would be working she would take me to bookstores, to get food, and she would help me with my homework. I remember she would always make me do my multiplication tables. I would always dread it and complain. Now when I think about it I deeply appreciate her doing that, I can fully say now that I know my times tables. I carry her through my life because I want to do the same things with my kids that she did with me.  Summary: Today we did a worksheet on our minds and hearts. Also a common lit assignment. Reflection: I learned how I drew out different symbols on my paper from my heart and mind. I did happier symbols on the heart and darker/sad on the mind.

Prompt: In “Heart, We Will Forget Him!” by Emily Dickinson, the speaker shows a conflict between what we think and what we feel. Describe a time when your heart and your mind seemed to want two different things. Which one did you listen to, and why?

Prompt Response: I remember that my heart and mind wanted two different things. My heart wanted me to buy clothes. But my mind knew that I needed to save and spend it on more important things. All I wanted was more shirts and shoes, and I also needed to buy parts for my car. The car was obviously more important than some new clothes that I absolutely didn’t need. In the end I did in fact listen to my mind because I knew it was the right thing to do. Summary: Today in class we did a packet on our hearts and our minds. Reflection: I learned that we can use different colors to symbolize our feelings. We also used imagery to help our logic.

In Emily Dickinson’s “I Felt a Funeral, in My Brain,” the speaker experiences a mind that seems to work against her. Sometimes our own thoughts can make a situation feel worse than it actually is. Describe a time when overthinking, worrying, or doubting yourself affected the way you handled a situation. What did you learn from the experience?

Prompt Response: A time when I felt like I was overthinking something was when I was training over the summer. I kept telling myself that I should be eating certain foods, training for certain hours, sleeping 8+ hours a night ETC. I stressed myself out to the max that I was not getting the love and fulfillment from my sport. I ended up taking about 1 and a half off, and this took a lot for me. But over that week each day I kept getting more and more excited to train again. I learned that I don’t have to always be perfect, I can make mistakes, and I won’t “fail” or “lose everything”. Summary: Today in class we read “ I felt a funeral in my brain.” Reflection: I really liked the story. We read it 3 different times, which helped us get a better understanding of the story.

In “Because I could not stop for death” Emily Dickinson life as a journey that eventually comes to an end. what experiences in your life I reminded you that time most quickly how have those experiences affected the way you value your time?

Prompt Response: I have realized how fast time moves when I am having fun. When you’re having fun, I feel like time moves faster. I remember when in the summer, I realized that it was over I couldn’t even believe it. I didn’t even know that time of that fast, but it was because I was having fun all summer long. I like to value my time by spending it on doing the right things. Not fooling around because that’s a waste of my time and I like to value my time. Reflection: Absent Summary: Absent

I knew that I belonged when we all got along and I can tell them anything I could go to practice and being in a bad mood, and my mood with automatically be lifted because I saw them. we do everything together, and we also travel which is just creating more connections with us. we also miss out on the same things, but we also gain new experiences from each other. it’s nice to have people who just get it. Summary: Today we did a common lit assignment in class. Reflection: I learned more about reading comprehension. Also about paying attention and reading so when I write my response, I know what I’m doing.

Prompt Response: A fear I’ve overcome his back on my bike gift or crashing last year. I had a race on the second day of the race some girl collided on my back wheel and it cost me to flip over my bars and all over on the ground. I passed on the ground and I was screaming for help, but then I actually passed out. I woke up on the sideline stand and was stuttering and couldn’t remember much a couple weeks later after my crash and concussion had healed up I had to get on my bike. I was with a group and I was gonna do it. They thought of crashing and getting terrified me Sopha for weeks I was going super slow, hitting my brakes and swerving a ton. I had literally realized that me crashing actually it wasn’t my fault in the first place my writing skills had nothing to do with the crash so I kept telling myself that and over the next few weeks I felt more and more comfortable and I’m safe to say that I have fully recovered and overcome the fear.  Summary: In class today we had work...

Prompt Response: The word that I use most commonly right now is girly. I got this word for my old English teacher last year Miss cyber she called her whole class the girl and the boys and it was mostly an inside joke between us in the class. The word girly comes from girl which is someone sex and the Y was added to make it feminine. It’s a part of my vocabulary because I use it when I go over my friends or when I try to get through attention, for instance I will say hey girl in the whole to my friends, and the boys said they can annoyed but its funny. Summary: we did work in the college books. They were mostly focused on vocab in the 15 new words we went over as a class. When my friends seem upset i always ask what's going on and I can usually tell. Even people who are really good at hiding their emotions I'm usually able to tell if something's going on and I always like to help them. But what's funny enough is that i'm not very good at hiding my emotions. So people will always be able to tell if something's wrong with me. Which I don't think is a bad thing it's just something different. Summary: We did presentations in class. Reflection: We did presentations in class

Analyze how you’ve adapted to the demands of this course over the past week, and evaluate one strength and one challenge you anticipate as we progress, justifying your insights with personal examples.

Prompt Response: Over the course of this past week I have developed new interests in the subject. I also have discovered other strengths that I have when it comes to this topic we are learning about. The strengths that I felt I have developed was that I can connect thematic elements with different contexts of the stories. I can easily see the themes with the nature contrast that we had talked about in class. One challenge I faced was that using historical pieces of the text and then relating to modern terms. I will just pay more attention to these smaller details. Summary: Overall I felt that I had a good understanding of the origins myths we had read. I will take notes and learn more about themes and their elements. Reflection: I got used to this class by learning to look for deeper meanings and cultural values in Native American creation stories instead of just reading them.

Prompt: How did creating your own origin myth help you better understand why cultures use stories to explain the origins of people, places, traditions, or natural events? In your response, describe the choices you made while developing your myth and explain the lesson, value, or human responsibility you wanted your story to communicate.

Prompt Response: Creating an origin myth story can help a person understand a confusing story into an understandable one. When a person writes a fictional story/myth most would think that it had no natural events that had happened. Then they realize that ancient cultures had not just made this up for fun. That they were real things that had happened and were completely true. People would make these stories to have the big world seem small and understandable. Summary: Today we started learning about Native American origin myths/stories. Reflection: I liked learning about How people had lived back then. And how they wrote stories and how interesting they were and we're actually true with the elements that are in nature.

I use it when i race and has so much value in my life that I could never give it up. This carries a story in my life because every single time I use it during your race something new happens. So I can always tell a new story to people about something new that has happened with it. Summary: We talked about out Native Origin Stories Reflection: I learned new and interesting ways that they lived. It was cool how the stories were used with different elements of nature.

Write about a time you felt connected to nature, like the kinship in Native American myths.

Prompt Response: I have felt connected to nature when I am swimming, biking, and running. Being just outdoors. Being outside makes me feel more aware or my surroundings and reminds me of how this is such a small part of this big world. This connects to the idea of kinship with nature because Native Americans are always in nature. I relate to this because I spend so much time outside and thai creates such a sense of respect with me in the natural world. Whether I am biking on the road, swimming in open water, or running in the woods. Summary:The Native American myths for studied often show a close relationship between humans and the natural world. Nature is not just a background it has important rules. The stories teach people to respect nature and recognize that we are all connected in some way. Reflection: Reading the myths made me feel how I can relate to nature and connect it to my real life. I really said I feel happiest when I'm in nature because I'm outside and it...
